About The Project
Use design thinking principles we re-invented the classic student textbook for Literature.
•Empathis - marketing and teacher interviews and feedback
•Define-Generating Problem Statements and Affinity Clustering
•Ideate-engagement, organization, labeling
•Prototype/test-sprint low-fidelity wireframes- test, revise, high fidelity prototypes-test, revise, test.
Challenge
• Market feedback “why pay for a new book when it’s the same old same old as the previous editions”
•What do teachers have and how can they best use it?
•Florida standard was changing
•Prototype print and digital together
we took the time to sticky our issues and what just didn’t work on each page and experiences.
we produced inexpensive, scaled-down versions that were tested within the team itself.
After testing within the team, and with other departments, we groomed our pages into high fidelity prototypes based on the users’ experiences.
About The Project
Migrated a print product into a digital product that brings the same experience to the user.
Challenge
•12,613 pages migrated to digital
• 6 weeks for design development
* 364-page templates
• only CSS updates to current digital design components
•working with print SMEs who have never done a digital product
•team with no digital experience
•smes only experts in print media
The content strategy was the first major UX hurdle since we needed to fully map out the digital experience in order to determine what content would need to be adjusted in order for the user to have the same experience for both print and digital.
The second major UX challenge was ensuring a simple and usable experience on every screen, while also allowing for multiple layers of content and navigation. Striking this balance required multiple rounds of prototyping and revisions. We needed to come up with a consistent way to organize all the content and every grade from 6th to 12th. To ensure a consistent experience for all users, every piece of content needed to be fully accessible on desktop and mobile.
Challenge Solutions
To solve our UX challenges, I worked with editorial to create a document or writer’s guidelines on when and what patterns to use based on instructional outcomes. This includes content updates needed for the digital content and this was shared with our editorial vendor and our production/engineer vendors with a detailed walkthrough meeting.
For the second challenge, I created detailed style guides on how the responsive behavior for the static patterns should behave so that content engineers could communicate these to their vendor who was doing all the back-end work. I also created a feedback template to give detailed information on CSS corrections to CE as the project moved forward.
Working with SMEs to develop a content strategy for the page to make the experience the same whether the student uses a textbook or the digital ebook
Step 1- received markup up content from the print component with indications from the sme’s on what they think would work for the digital components.
Step 2-4: Workshop with sme’s to provide low-fidelity sketches and then high-fidelity comps. These high-fidelity comps are presented to stakeholders for approval.
Step 5 & 6- developed communication documents for both our content and design agency so they can create over 600 pages in a timely manner with only 2 points of review.
HMH Into Literature was up for adoption in Texas and got market feedback that the basal program did not have leveled readings that were critical to meet state standards and thus might lose market share without it. So the creative team was tasked to develop and get 180 titles ready for market within 2 months.
Challenge
I had to have all 180 titles ready for the market in 8 weeks from concept to live. The program was beyond the scope of the work, so I had to do all work in house and use free assets. Instructed that these needed to be engaging and fresh but limited to the current UX patterns available in the library.
Challenge Solutions
Created 5 themes. These included color updates throughout several patterns and 5 motion graphic paths. All animations were CSS based and we updated the motion icon to be customized per selection. The product also needed to be a printable pdf.

Production including updating graphics
Step 1- coming up with design solutions that would be quick to product and yet has a “wow” factor. Breaking out of the box of the design system without breaking the system
Step 4- Specs and responsive guidelines clearly created and documented.
Step 6- provided clear directions to development on how to handle our css animations.
Collections—the nation’s leading ELA program for Grades 6–12—provides a multi-faceted digital and print approach that transcends the traditional anthology and resonates with today’s students.
I managed two grades (over 600 pages each) and developed the individual headers for each story selection including photo research and font treatments.
About The Project
Trillium Publishing hired me to design several books within a series for Catapult Learning. The books ranged in level for beginning readers requiring following precise guidelines on typefaces, text placement, and font sizes. Images needed to be clear and informative for a young reader while still being exciting and engaging.
Challenge
Engaging Layouts using limited photo sourcing.
Challenge Solutions
Used consistent text placement so the struggling reader could easily find the content but changed the visual arrangement with a series of templates: 3/4 spread, 1/2 spread, full spread areas. Combine this with the layering of custom graphics to expand the stock photos’ interest and create pop-outs.
